Immense appreciation is due to the firefighters tirelessly battling the Park Fire, now one of the largest wildfires in Northern California's history. Evacuation orders remain in place for Butte, Tehama, Shasta, and Plumas counties.
Fire started July 24, 2024, as of August 2nd, (CLICK FOR UPDATES) Cal Fire reported that containment remained at 24%, ravaging 397,629 acres so far.
Ronnie Dean Stout II, 42, with a criminal history that includes convictions for lewd acts with a child and robbery causing great bodily injury, is now facing charges of intentional arson. Stout, who has two prior "strike" felony convictions, could be sentenced to life imprisonment under California's "Three Strikes and You’re Out" law if found guilty of this new charge. He was arrested at his home on Thursday morning for allegedly starting the Park Fire intentionally by pushing his mother's burning car into a ravine in Upper Bidwell Park. The district attorney's office has identified him as a resident of Chico. Reports indicate that after the incident, he was observed leaving the scene calmly, attempting to blend in with the crowd following an interaction with a group of women who suspected Stout was under the influence.
Upper Bidwell Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the nation and is home to many hiking and biking trails, swimming holes and picnic areas.
The Park Fire is the largest wildfire in the state so far this year and the fifth-largest wildfire in California history.
The fire has scorched an area more than six times the size of the city of Sacramento. A Cal Fire firefighter said the flames were still spreading at a rate of 4,000 to 5,000 acres per hour on Monday.
The top four are the 2020 August Complex (1,032,648 acres), the 2021 Dixie Fire (963,309 acres), the 2018 Mendocino Complex (459,123 acres), and the most recent, only 4 years ago, 2020 SCU Lightning Complex (396,625 acres).
